Motor Alternator Replacement in Signal Substation S-5 at Mott Haven
Verde Electric has been contracted by Metro North Railroad to rehabilitate an existing signal power Substation (S-5), consisting of two motor-alternator (MA) sets and associated equipment located in Mott Haven, NY. The Mott Haven signal power substation S-5 converts 13.2 kV 60Hz AC power from Con Edison to 2.4kV 100Hz AC power and via a distribution network serves the railroad’s signal system on both the Harlem and Hudson lines.
The S-5 substation based on its central location on the railroad is considered a critical signal power source. S-5 signal substation is located in an active railroad. The purpose of the rehabilitation is to upgrade and bring the aging substation facility and its equipment to a fully renewed state.
Verde has a successful history of completing projects on time and within budget for Metro North Railroad. This project involves specialized coordination to complete the project with no disturbance to the existing and fully functioning Metro North Mott Haven Yard Complex.
